The French-Azerbaijani University organizes weekly research seminars under the newly established research department for promoting science and enhancing research in different fields. It will allow the participants to exchange on the related topics and discover possible collaboration opportunities between researchers. UFAZ Scientific. 17-18/05/2022, UFAZ Master 1 students geophysics-archeological field trip to Ganja

On 17th May, UFAZ first-year master students of Geosciences made a field trip to do the geophysical exploration of Kurgan of Uzun Rama from the Bronze age on an archeological site located in Goranboy region as a part of their curriculum.
The goal was to assist archeologists from ANAS in their studies of the Kurgans of Uzun Rama by imaging the site before digging. They were guided and assisted by PhD student Lola Huseynova who taught them about the history of Kurgans.
Students learned the usage of different geophysical tools with French teachers: magnetic method with Dr. Bruno Gavazzi (company ENEREX), Georadar with Dr. Maksim Bano (University of Strasbourg), Seismic with Dr. Christian Camerlynck (University of Sorbonne) and Electrical Resistivity with Dr. Clara Jodry (UFAZ).

28/04/2022, UFAZ Earth Science Student Club’s field trip to Azercosmos

On 28 April 2022, Earth Science Club organized a company trip to Azercosmos for its members. It was general tour of the company. Members learned about the operation principles of the satellites and the types of satellites that are used. They found the trip quite insightful, motivating, and fruitful. Everyone was left with great impressions and wonderful memories.

06/04/2022, Movie Debate Session about Climate Change

In the framework of Weekly Scientific Conferences, the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ) held a cinema-debate session on April 6, supported by the French Embassy in Azerbaijan.
After watching director John Clay’s documentary “Breaking Boundaries: The Science of Out Planet” (2021), Marie-Claire Pierret, Geochemist and Specialist in Environmental Science, and Head of Hydro-Geochemistry Observatory of the Environment, and Clara Sonia Jodry, Coordinator of Geoscience Program at UFAZ and Specialist in Geophysics applied to Environmental Science discussed the global climate change.

07/03/2022, UFAZ Earth Science Student Club’s field trip to Siyaki outcrop

On 7 March, UFAZ Earth Science Club had a field trip with the 24 ESC Members and 3 ESC Organisation Committee Members to Siyaki Outcrop. Trip was supervised by Shafag Bayramova – Head of Deparment Paleontology and Stratigraphy at Institute of Geology and Geophysics. During the field trip students got an opportunity to learn about oil and gas formations from the Paleocene to the Quaternary. Students also got information about the structure of the area and the outcrop’s geological parameters.

02/03/2022, UFAZ held mini-symposium of Geology

On March 2, 2022, French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ) organized a mini-symposium dedicated to Earth sciences, and more specifically to geology. During the event, Dr. Baylar Aslanov, from SOCAR ‘Geological and Geophysical Compilations’ Department delivered a lecture on “Evlakh-Agdjebedi Mesozoic sediments – Oil&Gas perspectives”, Dr. Guilherme Bozetti, from Earth and Environment Institute of Strasbourg delivered a lecture on “The use of outcrops’ architectural analysis for reservoir facies prediction”, and finally, Dr. Mathieu Schuster, from Earth and Environment Institute of Strasbourg delivered a lecture “Wind-driven lakes: The role of wind in the transfer and distribution of terrigenous sediments in large lakes”.

24-25/02/2022, UFAZ 3rd year bachelors’ Islamdag Field Trip

On February 24 and 25, 2022, UFAZ Oil & Gas Engineering and Geophysical Engineering students participated in the sedimentology fieldwork within the ‘Geology of Sedimentary Basins and Reservoirs’ course by UFAZ Invited Professor Dr. Mathieu Schuster from the University of Strasbourg.

On December 17, the Earth Science Department of French-Azerbaijani University organized its 1st Earth Science Mixer event. This networking event offered a great opportunity to professionals and partners of UFAZ in the area of Earth Sciences to get together in a friendly atmosphere, with the objective to stimulate further collaboration between university, research institutes and companies.

16/12/2021, UFAZ held an informative session on PhD opportunities

On December 16, an informative session on doctoral (PhD) education opportunities at Strasbourg University as well as other French universities was held for UFAZ master’s degree students.  Philippe Turek, head of research department, then informed the students about the rules and requirements of doctoral studies. Starting from next year, UFAZ graduates may have the opportunity to study in France or Azerbaijan at the full PhD level under the joint supervision of UFAZ and Unistra professors, as well as any other international doctoral program.

10/12/2021, UFAZ Earth Sciences Competition for high school students

On December 10, French-Azerbaijani University organized a competition dedicated to Earth Science with the participation of high school students. The competition was organized by UFAZ Earth Science Student club to high school students’ interest in the subject. Students of Modern Education Complex named after Heydar Aliyev won 1st place in a 3-round competition.

21/11/2021, Earth Science Student Club’s field trip to Khizi-Altiagac

On November 21, UFAZ Earth Science Student Club had a field trip with 29 Members & 5 Committee Members to Khizi-Altiagac Outcrop. Trip was supervised by Quentin Boesch, Teacher at EOST, and Zohra Hajizada, BP Geologist. During this field trip, students got the opportunity to learn about sedimentology and depositional environments as well as regional and outcrops’ geological structure.

14/11/2021, Earth Science Student Club’s field trip to Islamdag

On November 14, UFAZ Earth Science Student Club had a field trip with the 23 Members & 4 Committee Members to Perikushkul – Islamdag Outcrop. Trip was supervised by Rufat Aliyev, BP Reservoir Development Geologist. During the field trip students got the opportunity to learn about Petroleum Systems through the study of the regional and outcrops’ geological structure.

30/10/2021, Earth Science Student Club’s field trip to Gobustan Mud Volcano

On 30 October, UFAZ Earth Science Student Club had a field trip with the 24 Members & 3 Committee Members to Dashgil Outcrop. Trip was supervised by Asad Babayev, BP Lead Operations Geologist and Dr. Clara Jodry, Associate Professor at UFAZ and local Geosciences Program Manager. During the field trip students got the opportunity to learn about Mud Volcanoes, their formation and relation to the oil industry.

26-28/10/2021, Visit to Azerbaijan International Mining Company (AIMC)

On 26-28 October, Dr. Clara Jodry (associate professor at UFAZ and local Geosciences program manager) and Dr. Elshan Abdullayev (Geophysical Engineering program coordinator at UFAZ) visited Azerbaijan International Mining Company (AIMC) in Gadabay. During the trip, they met with Dr. Stephen Westhead, vice president and Dr. Anar Valiyev, geological manager of AIMC, to visit the companies facilities (geological and chemical plants), discuss possible collaborations on research projects and internship offers for master degree students at UFAZ.

18-20/10/2021, 4th year Bachelor Geological field trip

The fourth year bachelor Geophysics Engineering completed a 5 day Geological field trip comprised in the program at UFAZ. The objective of the field trip is to learn basic geological field measurements (measure of strike and dip) and recognise key structure in the rocks in order to reconstruct the geological history and past-environments of Azerbaijan.

11-15/10/2021, 2nd year Master Geological field trip in Lahij

The second year master students in Geosciences completed a 5 day Geological field trip (comprised in the program at UFAZ) in the village of Lahij in Ismayilli district. Dr. Talat Kangarli, Dr. Shafag Bayramova (Institute of Geology, ANAS), Dr. Clara Jodry, Dr. Elshan Abdullayev (UFAZ), Dr. Cécile Robin and Marc Jolivet (University of Rennes I) taugth tsedimentology and structural geology to the students (theory and pratice).

On October 6, UFAZ Geoscience Coordinator and Associate Professor Dr. Clara Jodry delivered a research seminar on “Hydrogeophysics – How to better represent physical structures and phenomena linked to groundwater? A path to sustainable water management”.

20/09/2021 to 01/10/2021, 4th year Bachelor & 2nd year Master Geophysical field trip

From 20-24th September, second year master students completed a 5 day geophysical field trip (comprised in the program at UFAZ) under the supervision of Dr. Clara Jodry (UFAZ), Dr. Maxime Bano (University of Strasbourg, EOST), Dr. Frédérique Moreau (University of Rennes I) and Etibar Garavaliyev (Seismic Survey Center). They performed a multi-method geophysical investigation to image seawater intrusion in the Shikhov coastal area of Absheron Peninsula using electrical resistivity tomography, seismic tomography, gravity and georadar methods. During this field trip students acquired theoretical knowledge about principles of these methods and practical knowledge on how to deploy them on the field.

From 27th September to 1st October, the fourth year bachelor students completed the same geophysical field trip over 2 days (comprised in the program at UFAZ) under the supervision of Dr. Clara Jodry (UFAZ), Dr. Maxime Bano (University of Strasbourg, EOST) and Etibar Garavaliyev (Seismic Survey Center). They learned to use electrical resistivity tomography, seismic tomography and georadar methods.
